Basket course planned

LLBRV to host workshop

DeLayne Segar, a local Fort Dodge artist, will be leading a pine needle basket workshop Nov. 4 and 5 for Legacy Learning Boone River Valley at 723 Seneca St., Webster City.

Pine needle basket weaving is among the oldest known Native American crafts, according to Segar. Cherokee and other Southeast Indians baskets were traditionally made using bundled pine needles.

During the workshop, participants will complete a basic pine needle basket and learn a basic stitch to create baskets of their own. Organizers said Segar has introduced new designs and participants will experiment with various styles of basket making. The inexpensive process uses natural materials and can be utilized to make unqiue-looking baskets. Once used to carry water, winnow seeds and as feed baskets, today the baskets are popular as gifts.
