A closer look at Seneca Foundry

Bill Smith, Seneca Foundry employee, educates students on different components used at the manufacturing company Thursday morning. Iowa Central Career Academy students toured the business to learn about technical career path options.

Students from the Iowa Central Career Academy toured Seneca Foundry Thursday morning to get a glimpse into the world of manufacturing. High school juniors and seniors from Webster City, Eagle Grove, Clarion, Fort Dodge and Humboldt participated in the tour of the foundry.

“The importance of providing tours to the students is to offer them a glimpse into what manufacturing is and open their minds into what opportunities are available for them beyond high school,” said Seneca Foundry COO Lori Mason.

Students were shown castings and taught about the skill sets foundry employees possess in order to create these castings. A highlight of the tour was the Foundry in a Box activity. Students got to make a small casting to take home with them.

“For students to see manufacturing happen first hand, it gives them a whole new level of understanding,” said Mason. “They see that it takes many different people with many different skill sets to work together in order to safely create quality products, and gives them a chance to think about how it may impact their career goals.”

This is the third time students at the career academy have visited Seneca Foundry.

In honor of Manufacturing Day, the public is invited to Seneca Foundry today for an open house from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
