The cool temperature and wind didn’t stop art lovers from attending the 7th Annual Arts R Alive Sculpture Event Thursday evening at West Twin Park. The crowd was entertained by the brass quintet, Jive for Five, as they perused the eight diverse sculptures that were recently installed at the park.

“We’ve had nice crowds each night. The music has been wonderful and people have enjoyed the food as well as looking at each of the sculptures,” said event coordinator Janet Adams. “We keep hearing that each sculpture is very unique and very different this year and that makes a very nice show.”

Local artists Tim Adams and Cameron Mitchell were present at the event and shared their reasoning behind their works of art. Adams’ piece, “GROW” comes from his history in landscape and design. “GROW” showcases the vibrant colors that peak in the fall and show the fall colors out of season so they can be appreciated. This sculpture is a parallel reference to how we as humans also grow.

Mitchell’s piece, “Cascade” is a metal sculpture comprised of 1/8 inch discs “mimicking natural repeating shapes found in nature. It was made to let water and melting snow “flow down the cascading center.”

Dan Perry, a sculpture artist and event judge from the University of Northern Iowa, was impressed with art at the event.

“As a whole I like how the pieces work together,” said Perry. “There is diversity of color as well as scale. Everything seems to be really well made.”
