Stanhope celebration turns 60

Watermelon Day to feature parade, activities and free watermelon

STANHOPE — The 60th annual Stanhope Lions Club Watermelon Day is set for Saturday with a full slate of activities planned throughout the day, including free servings of ice-cold watermelon.

The day gets underway with the big parade at 10:30 a.m. The theme for the parade is “Celebrating 60 Years.” Parade contacts are Jessica Murray, 826-3290, or Wayne Romp, 826-3477. There are several parade categories, including business, church, club, horse, antique and children.

After the parade, the rides, bingo and food stands open in the city park. Inflatable attractions will be open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Beginning at 12 p.m. Jess and the Seldom Seen Band will perform. The kids pedal tractor pull gets underway at 1 p.m. and the Lions will be serving watermelon from 1 to 5 p.m. It’s BYOF — bring your own fork.

At 1:30 p.m., Belly Dancers will perform in the park, followed by Sheltered Reality Drummers at 2:30 p.m. The kids nickel scramble will begin at 2 p.m. and Tickle the Clown will be in the park doing face painting. Enjoy a slice of pizza beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The Hanson Family Juggling and Unicycle Show is up at 3:45 p.m.

The evening will bring more watermelon at 7 p.m. That’s also the time the cash drawings will be announced. One lucky winner will receive $500 while one person will win $100 and six people will claim a $25 cash prize. Tickets can be purchased in advance from any Lions Club member or during Watermelon Day.

In case of rain, the activities will be held the following day, Sunday, July 16.
