It’s fair time

Activities abound for every age

It’s time for the Hamilton County Fair this week and officials are gearing up for the 100th continuous year of the annual expo.

Judging activities began Sunday night with the Clover Kids pet show judging and continues this morning with the judging of 4-H photography, visual arts, science, mechanics and engineering, ag and natural resources, home economics, poster art and personal development projects from 8:30 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.

Tuesday, the day begins with dog obedience judging in the show arena. The show begins at 8 a.m. The pet show follows at 1 p.m. in the Crestview Nursing and Rehabilitation Tent. Open class check-in begins at 8 a.m. and continues until 2 p.m. for photography, textiles and hobby craft entries. Wine contest entries can be checked in from 4 to 6 p.m.

Tuesday night, the big fair parade through downtown and ending at the fairgrounds. The Farmers Challenge will follow in the show arena and the midway opens at 6 p.m. with armband specials from 7:30-9:30 p.m.

Wednesday morning begins with the 4-H horse show showmanship and performance lots at 8 a.m. In the Claude Arena. At the same time, the poultry show begins in the show arena.

Rabbit showmanship gets underway at 11 a.m. followed by other rabbit classes in the show arena.

The Pride of Iowa contest begins at 4:30 p.m. in the Ed Prince Building.

For open class, the first flower show judging begins at 1 p.m., followed by the products of the kitchen at 2 p.m. and the field and garden judging at 3 p.m.

A spelling bee with the Iowa State Fair Queen will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. Kids are invited to take part in the pedal pull at 3:30 p.m. just south of the Coop Building, sponsored by the Hamilton County Farm Bureau.

The midway opens at 4 p.m. and the Hamilton County Fair Foundation will hold a fundraising meal from 5 to 7 p.m. Cap off the night with the Porker 40 Stock Car Races at the Grandstand.

Thursday begins with a pancake breakfast sponsored by the Hamilton County Fair Foundation in the Crestview Tent from 6:30 to 8:30 a.m. The breakfast will also be held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the same time.

Sheep will be in the show arena Thursday morning for the 4-H livestock show beginning at 8 a.m. The older 4-H Lamb barbecue is set for noon. The goat show begins at 1:30 p.m. and the dairy cow show gets underway at 3 p.m. The bottle lamb/goat show will follow at 4 p.m.

In the Claude Arena, horse show trail lots begin at 1 p.m.

4-H club members will test their knowledge at 4:30 p.m. in the Ed Prince Building with the Quiz Bowl.

Thursday night, Harness races will be held in the grandstand at 5 p.m. Following that, the 2017 Fair Queen will be crowned in a coronation ceremony and reunion which will be held at about 7:30 p.m.

Friday morning kicks off with the junior beef show at 8 a.m. in the show arena. The bucket/bottle calf show will be held at 5 p.m. in the show arena.

The evening will feature the IRCA Grand River Rodeo, beginning at 7 p.m. in the grandstand.

The junior swine show begins Saturday morning at 8 a.m.

Marking the 100th anniversary of Hamilton County ISU Extension and Outreach, a 4-H reunion will be held in the Ed Prince Building, featuring the presentation of the 100-year anniversary plaque. All current and former 4-H members are invited to attend the 2:30 p.m. program.

Also on Saturday afternoon, judging will be held for the second flower show. The Bill Riley State Fair Talent Search will be held on the Ed Prince Building at 4 p.m. Saturday. The winner in both the Sprouts and Senior Divisions will advance to the Iowa State Fairgrounds.

That evening will bring the Saturday Night Classic Plus Kids Night at the grandstand. Hot Laps begin at 6 p.m. with racing action to follow.

Sunday, the final horse show gets underway at 9 a.m. and the Hamilton County Fair Showdown begins at 11 a.m. The parade of champions follows at 1:30 p.m. in the show arena. Fair Scholarships will be presented to 4-H members will follow and capping the junior livestock events will be the Hamilton County Supreme Showman Competition.

Sunday night will feature the Eve of Destruction Demolition Derby and Trailer Races in the grandstand beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Monday brings the livestock sale at 8 a.m.

Throughout the week, the coloring mural will be open in the Ed Prince Building and the Chain Saw artist will be carving creations. The Coop Kids Zone will be open in the Coop Building from noon to 3 p.m. The pedal pull gets underway at 3:30 p.m. each day with the finals on The pedal pull gets underway at 3:30 p.m. each day with the championship on Sunday at 4 p.m.
