NEH board OKs reorganization study with WC

Zorn:?‘We want people to know that this board's goal is to keep this building open’

BLAIRSBURG — The Northeast Hamilton School Board unanimously approved a resolution to study reorganization with Webster City Community School District at its meeting Thursday afternoon.

In order to proceed with the reorganization study, the NEH district was required to have the same contracted employee salary schedule, professional development program and teacher evaluation process as Webster City.

The board then approved an amendment to the 2017-2018 staff contract which results in a salary adjustment of approximately $4,500 in order to align with Webster City’s pay schedule.

The adjustment per staff member ranges between $200 – $700, said Superintendent Mike Sherwood.

Any reorganization between the two districts would occur on or before July 1, 2019.

The Webster City Board of Education will consider the resolution at its Monday meeting at 6 p.m., said Sherwood.

If both school boards adopt the resolution to study reorganization and the proposal is accepted by the Iowa Department of Education, both districts will qualify for state funds, said Sherwood.

In other business, the board accepted the resignation of physical education instructor Josh Vanderloop.

Principal Mike Kruger reported that the Field Day on May 31 was a good end to the school year.

Sherwood reported that work will begin next week on the playground and walking track.

The meeting adjourned at 4:38 p.m.

Following the meeting, board members spoke of their goals for NEH.

“We want people to know that this board’s goal is to keep this building open,” said Sara Zorn. Several Board members echoed her commitment.

“Our goal is to have our school look the same as it does (today),” said Thea Wibholm.

The resolution only allows Northeast Hamilton to proceed to study reorganization if approved by the Webster City School Board on Monday, said Sherwood.

“All this is is that it allows us to sit down and talk,” said Sherwood. Topics, and goals will be determined by both districts and any plan must be approved by voters in both districts by 51 percent, said Sherwood.
