Legacy Learning Boone River Valley is hosting a reception for the new Artist in Residence in the Park, Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Hickory Cabin in Briggs Woods Park. All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Diane Kunzler has a degree in Art from Graceland University, Lamoni and an MFA from the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University in Boston, MA. She teaches a variety of workshops in pastel and oil painting as well as teaching 38 years in the public schools and serving as an adjunct for Iowa Central Community College. She has shown in juried and one person shows around the Midwest. Her work has focused on the landscape and environment for many years. From traditional panoramic views to cropped views of streams and ponds, she explores an idealized sense of place.

“Our Artist in Residence Program is new this year and we are featuring artists who were invited to spend a week in Briggs Woods Park to create their own work and interact with the public in an informal setting,” said Mike Brandrup, Legacy Learning Boone River Valley Board President.

The artists will also each mentor two local high school students who have been selected by their teachers and will meet to create their own work in collaboration with the visiting artist. The Mentee will also have an advocate such as a teacher or professional who will attend the mentoring sessions and offer support and feedback to the student after the residency is over.

Kunzler is the first artist in residence in the park, and her week begins March 13 at the cabin. Diane will work with the students on Tuesday and Thursday and the students will also be provided a scholarship to attend the Saturday public workshop.

The public is invited to stop by to watch her work anytime and also encouraged to attend the evening discussions and campfires. “The residency in Briggs Woods affords me the opportunity to explore an abundance of subjects of interest to me as an artist, and a unique opportunity to interact with people who visit the park. Art is so many times a solitary experience and I enjoy the casual interactions with people who are interested in my subjects and the artistic process,” Kunzler said.
