The Daily Freeman-Journal brought home six first-place awards Friday night, a Best of Class advertising award and several second and third-place honors from the Iowa Newspaper Association Convention held last week in Des Moines.

The awards were part of the Iowa Better Newspapers Contest, sponsored by the Iowa Newspaper Foundation. Newspapers throughout the state were invited to submit entries in design, writing, photography, web/Internet, marketing and advertising categories. The entries were then divided in to divisions for daily papers and weekly papers based on circulation size. Entries were judged by the Colorado Press Association.

Troy Banning, sports editor, received a first-place plaque for Best Sports Sections for daily newspapers with less than 10,000 in circulation. The judge said the pages featured “engaging stories and design. The coverage is comprehensive and captures the intensity of the emotions in both words and photographs.”

Banning also took second place in the Best Sports Columnist category, third place for best sports story and best sports feature photo.

The editorial department also received a third-place nod for its coverage of agriculture, and Anne Blankenship received third place in the Best News Story category for her story of the baby delivered in the Dairy Queen parking lot.

The advertising department received first place for Best Newspaper Marketing for the ‘i Subscribe’ series of advertisements. Other first place awards included Best Ad for Finance, Insurance or Professional Services for a Gabrielson Clinic ad and Best Web-based Ad for the Beaver Run Resort.

Our Hometown Monthly Magazine won first place for Best Ad for Community Promotion or Event as well as claiming the Best of Class Advertising trophy. Lois Raner, ad designer for the Daily Freeman-Journal, was named the Best Ad Designer for daily papers under 10,000 in circulation.

The Fan Fall Sports Preview won second place in the Best Special Section–Advertising category and Progress 2016 took third place in that category. The DF-J also took second and third place in the Best Ad Series or Campaign category with ads for Maharry Dentistry and the Cutest Baby Contest, respectively. Third place honors were awarded in Best Web Ad featuring the Hamilton County Speedway.

The DF-J received third place in General Excellence out of the 15 daily newspapers in the under 10,000 circulation class.
