A chocolate lover’s dream

KYL festival marks fifth year with January event

—Daily Freeman-Journal file photo Susan Griffith, Kendall Young Library employee, cuts sample size bites of chocolate goodies at last year’s Festival of Chocolate. This year’s event is scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 29 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by contacting the KYL at (515) 832-9100.

The Kendall Young Library will once again host a popular event, the Festival of Chocolate on Sunday, Jan. 29 from 2 to 4 p.m. Attendees can sample a selection of chocolate treats made by local community members at the event.

“It’s fun. It’s delicious. It’s local,” said Angie Martin-Schwarze, Kendall Young Library Director. “It is a fun event to hold in the middle of winter.”

The delectable event was started by the Friends of the Library board in 2013 to raise funds for different programs put on at the library. All funds raised at the Festival of Chocolate will be put towards future events and programs at Kendall Young Library.

“Everyone who comes to the festival is helping the Friends of the Library support the library,” said Martin-Schwarze.

Library officials said entries are still needed in each of the four categories — bars, cakes, candies and cookies. Winners in each category will be announced midway through the festival.

Attendees will also be able to enjoy live music as they sample a wide variety of chocolate desserts. According to Martin-Schwarze, there will be musical entertainment in the form of a string quartet.

“We’re still eager for people to sign up and bring in their chocolate creations,” Martin-Schwarze said.

Entry forms are available at the library or at www.kylib.org. Entries are due Friday, Jan. 20. Call 832-9100 for more details.

Tickets cost $10 and are available in advance and at the event.
