New location set for 2016 Relay for Life

The 2016 Relay for Life of Hamilton County will be held Thursday at West Twin Park beginning at 6 p.m. Pre-registration is from 5 to 6 p.m.

The park site represents a change of venue for the Relay which has previously been held at the Webster City High School track on Friday nights.

The American Legion will present the colors and “The Star Spangled Banner” will be sung during the opening ceremony.

The Survivor Walk will begin right after the opening ceremony and will take place on Bank and Water Street. Both streets will be closed off to traffic, according to Pat Nokes, one of the organizers.

Following the Survivor Walk, survivors and their care givers, who previously registered, will be served a light meal at the Fire Station.

The Luminary Service will begin at 9 p.m. A suggested donation to purchase a luminary in memory of a loved one is $10. If anyone wishes to purchase a luminary for their loved one but won’t be in attendance Thursday night, they can contact Nokes at (515) 290-8083.

There will be activities for all ages at West Twin Park throughout the night. Kids will be able to create chalk drawings. There will be a bouncy house for youth, hula hoops, a football toss, and Tae Kwon Do demonstrations.

A variety of food will be available for purchase. Kettle corn, cotton candy, smoothies and more will be sold at a food stand. A light meal will also be served at the park for a free will donation. The meal will consist of a pork sandwich or hot dog with chips, drink, and a bar.

“You can come out, have a light meal, and visit,” said Pat Nokes. “People are also welcome to take lawn chairs along to watch the festivities.

In case of rain the event will be held at The Bridge, located at the corner of Des Moines and Division Street.
