Bailey helps with musical

CEDAR RAPIDS – Allison Bailey of Webster City was the stage manager and worked on set construction in the recent Coe College theatre production of “Merrily We Roll Along.”

Bailey, a 2013 graduate of Webster City Community School, is the daughter of Kent and Milissa Bailey.

“Merrily We Roll Along” was written by George Furth, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The Coe production was directed by Coe Professor of Theatre Arts Steven Marc Weiss, with musical direction by Coe Assistant Professor of Music Michelle Perrin Blair and choreography by Carol Maxwell Rezabek.

With an all-student cast, “Merrily We Roll Along” includes some of the most-recognized musical numbers scored by Sondheim. The years do roll along, but backward, in this musical loosely based on a 1930s play by George Kaufman and Moss Hart. Updated to span the years 1957 to 1976, the subject is fame and how it can ruin the lives of individuals and sour their most precious and valuable friendships. The exceptionally strong Sondheim score includes some of his most brilliant musical numbers – including “Not a Day Goes By,” “Old Friends,” “Good Thing Going,” “Our Time,” “Now You Know,” and the title song, “Merrily We Roll Along.”
