Club report

The Lucy Standish Newcastle Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution met Nov. 5, at the Down Home Restaurant in Dows.

Hostess Iris Eriksen served pumpkin muffins, juice and coffee.

The business meeting was called to order by Regent Trudy Larson. She thanked all the members for the kindness shown her after the passing of her husband Ron

Marge Moore led the members in the prayer of invocation.

All then recited the Pledge of Allegiance to the American Flag and the Amercan Creed.

10 members and one prospective member answered Roll call, reporting on 176 volunteer hours.

The minutes of the October meeting were approved as read. Treasurer Beth Menges reported that all dues had been paid. Next year the Web Site “Members Helping Members” will be investigated. National and State Dues will be sent. There are no outstanding bills.

The President General’s Message from the October Spirit was given last month, and Dalene has not received her November copy as yet.

The National Defense Report was given by Iris Eriksen, in honor of the up-coming Veterans Day, a reading entitled “Muffle the Drums”

The DAR Schools report by Dalene Schlitter was on the founding of the settlement school in Kentucky in 1902 at Hindeman for the mountain youngsters.

The Regent read the commemorative events: November is National Indian Herigage Month; November 11, Veterans Day;, November 26th Thanksgiving Day. Two programs of interest were mentioned. “Saints and Strangers,” on national Geographic Channel on Nov. 22; and a Rick Burns film “American Experience, the Pilgrims,” on Nov. 24 on PBS

Lois Lesher gave the Conservation Minutes from Mid American Energy. Saving energy tips. Amy Kleckner told us of their Webster County Electric Company offering energy saving light bulbs for a dollar.

Ginny Wachenheim gave us an interesting time with her Daughter’s Minutes. Getting to Know YOU. Members wrote a secret about themselves that others did not know, and we all tried to guess which member it was.

Items for veterans at the Veterans home in Marshalltown were gathered, as well as monetary donations which will be matched by the chapter in the amount of $25.

The next meeting, Dec. 3 will be at the home of Cathy Moklebust at 9:30 A.M.

The business meeting was adjourned after the Daughters Pledge.

The program, “Chief Black Hawk and the Black Hawk War” given by Iris Eriksen. A history of the expansion of the white settlers onto the mid-west, and the treachery of the Government, the losing fight of the Sauk Indians and the sad tragedy and their plight.

Members then took the time to visit the Wright County Freedom Rock. which will be dedicated on Veterans Day, Nov. 11th.
