2nd-half run propels No. 6 Heelan past Lynx
SIOUX CITY — A 9-0 run midway through the third quarter gave the sixth-ranked Sioux City Heelan girls’ basketball team the breathing room it needed to fend off Webster City in a Class 4A Region 1 semifinal here Saturday afternoon.
Leading by just four points, the Crusaders’ spurt pushed their cushion to 35-22 and they went on to end the Lynx season, 56-46.
WCHS (8-14) trailed by only six points at the half. Heelan (17-5) extended its advantage to as many as 17 points in the second half, as it advanced to Tuesday’s regional final against seventh-ranked LeMars (19-3).
Taylor McKinney scored 10 of her team-high 12 points after the intermission for WCHS. The shooting guard will enter her senior season next winter needing just 29 points to become the first 5-player 1,000-point scorer in program history.
Zoey Woodle finished off her career with a 10-point performance. Adalie Schwandt added eight points, Grace Hoversten chipped in seven and Kelly Stoakes had six.
Ella Skinner (18 points), Katelyn Stanley (15) and Amber Aesoph (14) all scored in double figures for Heelan.
