STORY CITY — No. 29 just wasn’t in the cards.

Webster City wrestling coach Chad Hisler knew winning a sixth consecutive Norsemen Duals title on Saturday wasn’t going to be easy, not with upstart Hampton-Dumont among the six-team field. And in the end, the Bulldogs continued the late-season surge that began a week ago with a third-place finish at the North Central Conference tournament.

Hampton-Dumont snapped the Lynx run of 28 consecutive dual wins at the tournament in the final round, 49-21, to secure the title and push WCHS back into second place.

Already depleted by injuries, WCHS suffered another loss just prior to the start of the tournament when 152-pound senior Daltyn Peck had to be scrapped from the lineup for medical reasons. His loss, coupled with what Hisler felt were a couple of mistakes against Hampton-Dumont, put the Lynx in a hole they couldn’t climb out of.

“We wrestled really poorly in about three or four matches that we could have won against Hampton,” Hisler said. “We had a couple kids get caught up in the moment going for big moves when they didn’t need big moves. And Peck not being able to wrestle, we didn’t have many options.”

The NCC rivals were the clear front runners in the tournament. WCHS outscored OA-BCIG (69-6), Roland-Story (63-9), Central Decatur (72-12) and Saydel (70-6) by a combined 241 points. Hampton-Dumont beat the same four by a combined 232 points.

Four WCHS grapplers — ninth-ranked (Class 2A) Camron Phetxoumphone (106 pounds), top-ranked Drake Doolittle (120), Sean Godfredsen (160) and Michael Gilbert (182) — went 5-0 on the day. Six others — Chase Rattenborg (126), Brady Auderer (132), Nick Gasca (138), Cole Bingham (170), sixth-ranked Caleb Olson (195) and Gage Rossing (220) — put up matching 4-1 marks.

The Lynx, which ended the dual season at 14-10 overall, went 29-12 on the mat with 25 pins. Their combined record improved to 51-12 when forfeits — and there were many against several thin opponents — were factored in.

“I think we got what we needed and we have some kids who gained some confidence,” Hisler said. “We were able to work on some of the things we needed to work on.”

Phetxoumphone led the pin barrage with five. Doolittle, Rattenborg, Gilbert and Olson had three each.

Olson’s lone loss came at the hands of fifth-ranked Dalton Chipp of Hampton-Dumont. It’s the third time Chipp has snuck by the WCHS senior this season.

In the final dual, Doolittle decked the Bulldogs’ Abe Scheideman in 1:04 to cut the Lynx deficit to 31-21, but Hampton-Dumont reeled off the final four bouts to pull away.

In six seasons at the Norsemen Duals, the Lynx have now outscored their opponents by 1,331 points.

WCHS will now turn its focus to the postseason. It will host a 2A sectional on Saturday at noon that will also include Gilbert, Nevada, Perry, Roland-Story and West Marshall. The top two individuals at each weight will advance to districts at ADM High School in Adel on Saturday, Feb. 9. The first- and second-place finishers in the team standings will advance to regional duals on Tuesday, Feb. 5.
