Freland torches SH girls to lead PCM to win
Frigid from field, Hawks drop fifth consecutive contest
JEWELL — Too much Regan Freland and too many swings and misses from the perimeter sent the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team to its fifth consecutive loss Friday night on Coach Jim Marsh Court.
Freland, Prairie City-Monroe’s all-conference guard, splashed in five 3-pointers and ripped off 25 points to spring the Mustangs for a 47-34 victory.
“She was the best player on the floor and we left her open way too many times,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said.
South Hamilton (3-9, 2-5 HOIC) might have been able to withstand Freland’s output had it been able to knock down shots, but the Hawks connected on just 3 of 27 3-point attempts (11 percent).
South Hamilton’s top four scorers entering the game — Sydney Friest, Rylee Woodall, Emma Lewis and Aneesa Balderas — combined to shoot 5 of 36 from the floor.
“I thought we were getting good looks at the basket, but we couldn’t get an outside shot to drop,” Henderson said.
Breanne Diersen scored 10 points and led a third-quarter surge that got the Hawks within five points. Balderas finished with six, while Woodall and Lewis and four each.
PCM (4-6, 3-4 HOIC) jumped out to a 13-4 lead after one quarter. Sierra Foster added five points in her team’s win.
South Hamilton will be back at home Friday night to take on 11th-ranked (Class 3A) Roland-Story at 6 p.m.
