PREP BRIEFS: SH HAWKS HOOPS, WCHS LYNX WRESTLING

HAWK BOYS SURVIVE AGAINST TROJANS: The 30th consecutive regular season victory was anything but easy for the South Hamilton boys’ basketball team Saturday night in State Center.

Up by eight points with under one minute remaining, the Hawks (3-0) hung on by the skin of their teeth for a 66-64 victory over West Marshall (0-2). The Trojans hit a pair of 3-pointers late to put a scare into the visitors.

Logan Peters and Conner Hill both scored 20 points to lead South Hamilton. Cade Balvanz and Sam Lewis had eight each.

One night after connecting on 11 of 13 shots from the field, Hill struggled to just a 9 of 25 performance. The senior yanked down nine rebounds and distributed four assists. Quinton Grove also dished out four assists.

West Marshall hung close behind 12 3-point buckets. Alex Halter and Isaiah Borgos both dropped in 14 points.

SH GIRLS DIG HOLE, FALL: Ogden raced out to a 23-3 lead after one quarter and withstood a second-half rally by South Hamilton to win a girls’ basketball game, 47-37, Saturday afternoon in Jewell.

The Hawks (2-2) got as close as six points in the fourth quarter.

Sydney Friest scored a team-high 12 points for South Hamilton. Emma Lewis added nine points and collected a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with three steals. Breanne Diersen knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and notched eight points, and she joined Friest with six rebounds.

Abby Langel poured in 12 points for unbeaten Ogden (4-0). Meredith Adreon pitched in 11 more.

LYNX JV WRESTLERS CROWN FIVE CHAMPS: The Webster City junior varsity wrestling team had five champions and seven runners-up at Saturday’s Des Moines North-Hoover tournament in Des Moines.

Ryan Zutleau, Nick Gasca, Evan Estlund, Brendan Reynolds and Malachi Montes all reached the top of the podium.

Silver medals went to Gabriel Killian, Codey Berg, Curtis Heuton, Kaden Vaughn, Alex Hooker, Aidan Sullivan and Hank Ambrose.
