JEWELL — Winning four of five district games and reaching the playoffs for the second consecutive season has its advantages.

Following a 7-3 season and second-place finish in Class 1A District 2, the South Hamilton football team was rewarded recently with 15 all-district honors. Ten Hawks claimed spots on the first team, three made the second team and two more earned honorable mention status.

Jeremiah Smith, a 5-foot-11, 225-pound junior defensive lineman, led the way. Not only did he occupy a slot on the first team, but he also shared the district’s Defensive Most Valuable Player award with South Central Calhoun linebacker Landon Schleisman.

South Hamilton’s other first-team members included running backs Sam Lewis and DJ Klonglan; wide receiver Brandyn Feighner; offensive linemen Zeke Balderas and Teagan Risetter; defensive backs Cole Berg and Brock Galetich; linebacker Trevor Thompson; and defensive lineman Nathan Wilson.

Second-team honors for the Hawks went to tight end Cade Balvanz, offensive lineman Brayden Evans, and linebacker Cade Flaugh. Dominic Summers and Travis Storm were the honorable mention choices.

Smith was a run stuffer on a stout South Hamilton defense that allowed just 121 rushing yards and nine points per game in district play. He was credited with 31 tackles, 11 of them solo stops, and three tackles for loss while taking the brunt of the focus from opposing offensive lines.

Wilson made 201⁄2 tackles up front, seven of which were either in the backfield or sacks.

Thompson led South Hamilton in tackles with 50. He made 22 solo stops, piled up seven tackles for loss and four more sacks.

Galetich and Berg combined to intercept five passes when teams were forced to throw the ball.

Balderas, Risetter and Evans were all pieces off an offensive line that helped South Hamilton lead the district in rushing yards with 2,047. The Hawks finished the season with the No. 3 overall offense with 2,472 yards.

Feighner, also one of the top defensive backs in the district, reeled in nine catches for 199 yards and two scores. Balvanz was on the receiving end of four throws and he tacked on two touchdowns.

South Central Calhoun senior Chase McAlister was named the district’s Offensive MVP. The Titans also garnered the Coach of the Year award for Bryan Case and Assistant Coach of the Year award for Scott Trost.
