School’s Out Show at Hamilton County Speedway

Night’s biggest prizes go to McKenna, Auringer, Green, Plummer, Hollatz, Oberhelman

Charlie McKenna of Ames tours the track at the Hamilton County Speedway in Webster City on Saturday. He took home the $600 top prize following his win in the Malvern Bank Super Lake Model feature event.

WEBSTER CITY — Super-fast racing was in session on Saturday for the School’s Out Super Summer Spectacular presented by Casey’s General Stores at the Hamilton County Speedway driven by Spangler Automotive.

Charlie McKenna of Ames powered to his second victory of the season in the Malvern Bank Super Late Models, holding off veteran Marshalltown driver Darrell DeFrance.

Something broke on Ryan Griffith’s machine going into turn one on the first lap, which didn’t allow him to turn. It led to heavy contact with Jason Hahne and landing him on top of the turn two guardrail. Both drivers were uninjured.

Last week’s winner, Gabe Umbarger, was third with Carey Umbarger and Jenna Johnson behind.

In the Olsen Family USRA Modified main event, J.D. Auringer of Evansdale took home the $500 top prize with Webster City wheelman Mark Elliott backing up last week’s win with a runner-up paycheck.

Chanse Hollatz, Clear Lake, Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stock winner.

Ankeny’s Ben Nading claimed the third spot, while Iowa Falls drivers Chase Ellingson and Devon Havlik were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Defending Iron Man Challenge titlist Derek Green of Granada, Minn., rolled from his outside third row starting spot and exited the speedway with the $400 winner’s check in the Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars.

Steve Jackson of Polk City blazed a trail on the top side cushion and held off Green for several laps, but Green finally cut down low in turns 1 and 2, got a run on Jackson on the back chute with two laps to go and snared the lead and the win.

Jackson settled for second, followed by Jesse Brown of Nashua, Marshalltown legend Rick Gustin and Webster City’s Todd Staley from 17th on the grid.

Norway’s Tim Plummer led from start to finish to collect the Stein Heating and Cooling USRA B-Mod main event with Alex Zwanziger of Nashua holding off 12th-starting Ty Griffith of Webster City for second.

The feature was a great race that saw Plummer hold off Zwanziger while Griffith stormed through the field. Doug McCollough and Rocky Caudle rounded out the top five.

The Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks saw Chanse Hollatz of Clear Lake hold off last week’s Allstar Performance Allstar of the Week, Eric Stanton of Carlisle. The defending track champion, Hollatz held off the charges of Stanton — winner of last week’s tilt — to pick up the win after the pair went wheel-to-wheel over the closing laps.

Polesitter Matt Smith of Des Moines wound up third, Derek Willert of Marble Rock was fourth and Britt’s Tony Smidt took home fifth-place money.

Matt Oberhelman of Fort Dodge saw the checkered flag first in the USRA Tuner main event.

It was his first feature win at the Hamilton County Speedway in four years, and he said he’s glad his favorite race track brought back the USRA Tuner division. He gave his trophy to a young fan after the race, which was a noble gesture for the youngster from Fort Dodge.

Ryan Bryant of Mason City, Justin Nielson of Luverne, John Dahlsten of Pomeroy and Garner’s Sam Umbarger completed the top five.

WHAT’S ON TAP: Summit USRA Weekly Racing Series action continues on Saturday for Battle of the Badges where local police officers will be in high-speed pursuit as they read each other their rights and battle on the historical half-mile of dirt.

Malvern Bank Super Late Models, Olsen Family USRA Modifieds, Seneca Foundry USRA Stock Cars, Stein Heating and Cooling USRA B-Mods, Diamond in the Rough USRA Hobby Stocks and USRA Tuners are on the six-division card.

Gates open at 5 p.m., the drivers meeting is called to order at 6:50 p.m. and hot laps begin at 7:10 p.m. with racing to follow the National Anthem.

Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for juniors ages 12-16 and kids 11 and under are free. Fans can also purchase a Family Pack for two adults and two juniors for $32 (save $8). Pit passes are $30 for those 11 years of age and older, kids ages 6-10 are $20 and children 5 and under are free.
