Lewis and Skartvedt injured on collision, overshadows SH softball loss to Comets

ALLEMAN — An eight-hit, eight-run first inning by North Polk put the game out of reach before it really got started here Friday night, but South Hamilton head softball coach Harry McMaken was more concerned about the health of two of his players than he was about the outcome.

The Comets (7-4, 3-2 HOIC) battered the Hawks, 14-2. The game ended on Noelle Hoffman’s third double of the contest — a sinking liner in the left-center gap in the bottom of the fourth. South Hamilton center fielder Lily Skartvedt and left fielder Emma Lewis converged on the ball; both dove and collided heads as they went to the grass.

Skartvedt and Lewis were both taken to the hospital for precautionary reasons following the game.

“They are being evaluated now,” McMaken said via text message from the hospital Friday night. “Lily has a sore neck and bump on her head (and) Emma has ringing in her left ear.”

Neither was with the team at Saturday’s Van Meter Invite.

“Both are going through the concussion protocol,” McMaken said on Sunday. “They both spent (Saturday) resting. I know Emma spent the entire day sleeping. I don’t expect either of them back for at least a week.”

North Polk sprayed 18 hits around the park off South Hamilton pitcher Katie Johnson. Trisha Sporra went 4 for 4, Bailey Hougham was 3 for 3, while Hoffman and Ellie Owen were 3 for 4.

Six of the Comets’ hits were doubles.

South Hamilton (4-5, 1-3 HOIC), which saw its four-game win streak come to an end, finished with six hits, including doubles by Marla Grubb, Cortney Harris and Taylor Ratzke. Skartvedt, Breanne Diersen and Leah Jacoby all singled.

Jacoby drove in one run with a first-inning infield hit. Harris’ double to center in the fourth plated the Hawks other run.

VAN METER — With two voids in the outfield, South Hamilton had to adapt on the fly at Saturday’s Van Meter Invite.

The absences of Skartvedt and Lewis were felt, as the Hawks dropped contests to 12th-ranked (Class 2A) Van Meter, 10-0 in six innings, and Fort Dodge St. Edmond, 7-5.

“It was a learning process for the girls … when you lose two starters from your outfield, it’s tough to overcome that in a 24-hour period,” McMaken said. “It’s one of those things where we’re going to have to suck it up a little bit and go from there.”

Breanne Diersen, Grubb and Harris accounted for the Hawks three hits against Van Meter.

Abby Archer went 3 for 4 with a home run and five RBI for the Bulldogs.

Harris and Jessi Harms had two hits each against the Gaels. Harms, Krista Swenson and Kaylee Osvig all had one RBI.
