WEBSTER CITY — An ankle injury has ended the prep softball career of Webster City senior Cassidy Nerland.

The five-year starter, who suffered the injury during practice back on May 31, will have surgery on Wednesday to repair a torn muscle and ligament in the ankle. She’s been in a walking boot since the injury occurred.

Nerland started eight games this season and was hitting .400 with one home run and eight RBIs.

The Lynx clean-up hitter virtually since the moment she stepped into the lineup as an eighth grader, Nerland exits the program with a career batting average of .341. She cranked out 17 home runs and drove in 100 runs.

As a freshman in 2015, she led the team in batting average (.410), doubles (7), homers (7) and RBIs (33), and was second in hits (41).

Nerland will join the women’s track and field program at Grand View University in Des Moines in the fall.
