Tigers take advantage of errors, hit walk-off HR to beat Hawks

Skartvedt, Lewis rip two-run doubles for South Hamilton in losing effort

MADRID — A slew of errors and one swing of the bat from freshman Erica Bruns spoiled the South Hamilton softball team’s season opener here Tuesday evening.

The Hawks committed seven defensive miscues that led to five unearned runs, and Bruns bashed a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to give the Tigers a 6-5 victory over the South Hamilton.

It wasn’t the way South Hamilton expected its season to begin.

“We were all a little disappointed because it wasn’t the outcome we were expecting,” Hawks’ first-year head coach Harry McMaken said. “The key thing is we now have the opportunity to improve and get better.”

Katie Johnson was the tough-luck loser in the circle. She surrendered just five hits and one walk while striking out six batters.

South Hamilton (0-1) sprayed just three hits, although two of them went for extra bases. Emma Lewis roped a two-run double in the second inning and Lily Skartvedt found the gap for a two-run double in the fourth. Lewis also lashed a single.

Jessi Harms drove in a South Hamilton run with a sacrifice fly.

Bruns also earned the win for Madrid (1-1). She came on in relief of Natalie Wilson in the fourth inning.
