Former Hawk coach Legg to retire from IHSAA in June

Bud Legg

WEBSTER CITY — After serving Iowa students for more than 50 years as a teacher, counselor, coach, school administrator, game official and Iowa High School Athletic Association information director, Bud Legg will join the ranks of the retired at the end of June, the IHSAA announced on Tuesday.

Legg, who spent time at South Hamilton from 1967 to 1975 and coached track, softball and basketball, has been with the IHSAA since 2001.

“The work has been a joy,” Legg said. “The people I have met through the IHSAA Hall of Fame and service awards … as well as those in our schools and members of the media, have enriched my life. I am grateful for the opportunity I was given.”

In his time with the IHSAA, Legg’s duties included the compiling of historical information, researching and updating state meet information, historical booklets, formulating all-time best lists and state records in each sport administered by the association. He’s also been the point man for members of the media, including print, radio and television.

The relationships he’s built across the state are numerous.

“It’s uncanny when you talk with people from across the state, there is always someone who has a positive story about Bud and the kindness he has shown them,” Alan Beste, the IHSAA Executive Director, said. “He has truly been a point of reference for high school athletics and an ambassador for the value of high school activities.”

Included among Legg’s professional honors are the IHSAA Officials’ Hall of Fame, the Iowa Girls Coaches Association Softball Umpires Hall of Fame, the NFHS Outstanding Service Award, and the Drake Relays Official Wall of Honor.

“I have had a very blessed life,” Legg said. “Especially with my late wife, Marge, of 32 years, and my daughter Annie and her family, plus a multitude of co-workers and friends. I cherish them all. I have always believed there are beginnings from endings for not only myself, but for the organizations with whom I have worked.”
