PANORA — The South Hamilton girls’ golf team took a successful first step on Monday towards what it hopes will be a berth in the state tournament later this month.

With three players on the first page of the leaderboard, the Hawks claimed the Class 2A Region 2B title at Lake Panorama National Golf Course. South Hamilton fired a 408 to top Heart of Iowa Conference rival and runner-up Roland-Story (416) by eight shots.

Both teams advanced to the Region 2 final, which will be held at the 5 by 80 Golf and Country Club in Menlo next Monday. They’ll be joined by Kuemper Catholic and Clarinda, which advanced out of the 2A Region 2A at Red Oak Country Club.

The top two teams at the regional final will qualify for the state tournament, which will be held back at Lake Panorama National Golf Course on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 29 and 30.

Only three players broke 100 on the difficult track that features plenty of water around Lake Panorama. South Hamilton’s Katelyn Sogard was one of them, as she carded a 98 to finish third individually.

Ogden’s Maranda Wheelock was the medalist with a 95, a stroke in front of runner-up CeCe Sturdivant (96) of Des Moines Christian.

South Hamilton’s Krista Swenson placed sixth with a 101 and Kenady Campbell shared eighth place following a round of 104.
