Peters sets school record in quest for Drake berth

NORWALK — Logan Peters is on a mission, one that he hopes will end on the blue oval inside Drake Stadium in a few weeks time.

Unfortunately, the weather has been his enemy, so far at least.

Without a chance to compete outdoors because of Mother Nature, Peters made a solo pilgrimage to the Norwalk Coed Relays on Tuesday simply so he could attempt to put himself in the Drake Relays 1,600-meter run conversation.

And he did just that.

Already the South Hamilton school record holder in the mile, Peters, a junior, lowered his mark to 4:33.24 and won the event against a large field. His time currently has him 17th overall in the state; the top 21 will qualify for Drake.

“He wants to go to the Drake Relays so bad and he can’t wait to get back on the track,” South Hamilton head coach Darrell Paulsen said of Peters, a former state medalist in the mile.

Peters coasted out to what Paulsen called the smoothest opening 800 meters in 2:09 and led throughout. Dallas Center-Grimes’ Jacob Waymire (4:37.25) caught up as they hit the final straightaway, the Peters turned on the jets over the final 100 meters and won easily.

And this was just a starting point. Paulsen said Peters will likely have to dip into the 4:20’s to reach Drake, something he’s more than capable of doing.

“The sky’s the limit, it really is,” Paulsen said.

South Hamilton will compete outdoors as a team for the first time this spring today in Manson. The Hawk girls’ team will also be in action.
