Nerland, Flaws in top 10 at ISU Indoor

Woodle, Hay also in action for Lynx at opening meet of season

AMES — The Webster City girls’ track and field team took four athletes to the opening indoor meet of the season on Monday and they turned in solid performances.

Senior veterans Cassidy Nerland and Haley Flaws led the charge with top-10 performances at the ISU Indoor, while junior Zoey Woodle and sophomore Ashlyn Hay built confidence as well.

“It was the first meet of the year and they performed well,” WCHS head coach Clint Howard said. “They set some marks that they can improve hopefully this Friday (at the BVU Indoor).”

Nerland, a six-time state qualifier and three-time state medalist, opened her final prep campaign with a fourth-place finish in the shot put with a top heave of 37 feet, 51⁄2 inches. Flaws sprinted her way to a sixth-place result in the 60-meter dash in 8.26 seconds, and was also 14th in the high jump after she cleared 4-10.

There were 112 entrants in the shot put, 146 in the 60 and 63 in the high jump.

Nerland and Flaws are both committed to Grand View University in Des Moines.

“Cassidy had a couple of things that we’ll fix right away, but it was a solid start,” Howard said. “The high jump was frustrating for Haley because she sat there for two hours and had two attempts.”

Hay joined Flaws in the 60 and raced down the straightaway in 8.67 seconds to finish 31st in the monstrous field.

“Ashlyn has worked extremely hard since last spring and has gotten a lot faster,” Howard said. “That was a really good starting point for her and we expect really big things from her this season.”

Woodle slotted into 19th in the long jump field of 88 competitors. Her best leap measured 14-93⁄4.

“Zoey had a good opening meet and got on the board a couple times,” Howard said. “She’s got some confidence.”

Friday’s BVU Indoor will be the Lynx final competition until the outdoor season gets underway at the Richard Ryan Relays in Gowrie on Monday, April 2.
