WEBSTER CITY — Cassidy Nerland has spent plenty of time throwing the shot and discus in Des Moines during her illustrious career at Webster City. She’ll get even more familiar with the state’s capital city in the fall.
Nerland, a WCHS senior, signed a letter of intent with Grand View University last Thursday. She’ll join the women’s track and field program as a thrower.
Nerland is the second Lynx girls’ track and field athlete to sign with Grand View. Classmate Haley Flaws is also bound for the NAIA school where she’ll join her older sister and former WCHS standout Allie Flaws.
Nerland is a six-time state qualifier and three-time medalist, as well as a four-time Drake Relays qualifier in her two favorite events.
She has placed eighth, eighth and 21st in the shot put at state. In the discus, she owns state finishes of14th, seventh and 13th.

At Drake, Nerland has placed 14th and 16th in the shot, as well as 21st and 12th in the discus.
A four-sport athlete for WCHS, Nerland also garnered all-North Central Conference accolades in volleyball, basketball and softball. She owns all of the girls’ basketball program’s 5-player rebounding records. She set the single-game and single-season marks this winter and moved to the top of the all-time chart as well.
On the softball diamond, Nerland has served as the Lynx clean-up hitter over the last four years. She has 16 home runs and 92 RBI in her career and has hit .410, .337 and .348 in each of the last three seasons.
