PREP BRIEFS: SOUTH HAMILTON HAWKS WRESTLING, BASKETBALL

SH WRESTLING SEASON ENDS AT 1A SECTIONAL: The South Hamilton wrestling team was unable to push any of its grapplers through to districts on Saturday in Ogden.

The Hawks’ best finish was third and they wound up eighth in the team standings with 651⁄2 points. Panorama (2171⁄2) won the team title.

Freshman 138-pounder Lane Swenson earned a sectionals bronze medal, but he was denied a spot in districts in the wrestleback round. He fell to Panorama’s Noah Kirtley by fall in 4:51.

Nathan Wilson (160) and Colton Willis (220) both won their first matches, but settled for fourth-place finishes. Mohamed Yokie (106) won two of three matches and was fifth.

NO. 5 HAWKS CHALLENGED, WIN: An 18-9 first-quarter run proved to be the difference on Saturday, as fifth-ranked (Class 2A) South Hamilton fended off Iowa Falls-Alden, 70-65, in Iowa Falls.

“Iowa Falls gave us all we could handle,” South Hamilton head coach Nathan Hill said. “I thought we played well on the offensive end, but we just weren’t disciplined enough on the defensive end. We have a lot of work to continue to do.”

Marco Balderas led South Hamilton (21-0) with 22 points, four rebounds and four steals. Cole Berg poured in 18 points, Logan Peters added 12 and Conner Hill finished with 11.

Freshman Karson Sharar led IF-A (7-10) with 19 points.

South Hamilton will finish off the regular season at home against Carroll Kuemper on Thursday.

CADET GIRLS TOO MUCH FOR HAWKS: The South Hamilton girls’ basketball team was outscored 40-13 in the middle two quarters and fell to Iowa Falls-Alden, 59-27, Saturday evening in Iowa Falls.

“Iowa Falls-Alden put a lot of pressure on us defensively and we didn’t handle it very well,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “Early in the game we were able to go over the top of their press and have some success, but as the game went on their pressure wore on us.”

The Cadets (12-8) clanged in 10 3-point baskets, seven of them coming from Katie Meyer and Darby Dodd. Meyer led all scorers with 26 points.

Sydney Friest led South Hamilton (8-14) with 13 points. Marla Grubb pitched in six points and eight rebounds.
