Grubb and Friest help propel SH girls to longest winning streak in six years

Hawk forwards combine for 35 points in 14-point win over Greene County

JEFFERSON — Up by seven points just two minutes into the game, the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team never relented and picked up its third consecutive victory here Tuesday night.

Marla Grubb and Sydney Friest dominated in the paint and scored a combined 35 points, as they helped propel the Hawks to a 54-40 victory over Heart of Iowa Conference rival Greene County.

“The girls did an excellent job of executing the game plan,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “I’m really feeling good with how we are playing right now and this is a good time of year to be peaking.”

The Hawks (8-12, 6-7 HOIC) are currently riding their longest winning streak since they rattled off seven in a row in January of 2012. The spurt over the last five days matches the team’s win total all of last season and is one better than their win total in the four seasons prior.

Grubb put up a game-high 19 points and came down with eight rebounds. Friest checked in with 14 points and a game-high nine boards.

Anna Moss added nine points, three steals and three assists in the win. Breanne Diersen yanked down seven rebounds to go along with two points.

Laurin Lyons led Greene County (5-13, 2-11 HOIC) with 14 points.

South Hamilton jumped out to a 26-19 halftime lead and increased it after the break. The Hawks went to the free throw line 22 more times than the Rams (31-9) and held a 16-6 scoring advantage there.
