Balderas and Hill pour in 39, No. 3 Hawks smack Ogden in 2A  district semifinal

Now 22-0, SH faces CGD Tuesday in Webster City

JEWELL — Make it 22 and counting.

That’s what the third-ranked South Hamilton boys’ basketball team ran its winning streak to here last night, as the Hawks smothered Ogden, 72-51, in a Class 2A District 14 semifinal on Coach Jim Marsh Court.

South Hamilton (22-0) advanced to Tuesday’s district final against Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (13-10) in Webster City. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

The balance that has been the Hawks’ calling card all season long continued to flourish, as five players scored in double figures.

“Offensively I thought we played pretty well besides some silly turnovers at times,” South Hamilton head coach Nathan Hill said.

Senior point guard Marco Balderas led the way with 20 points and crept to within 25 of reaching 1,000 points for his career.

Conner Hill, Balderas’s backcourt mate, drained four 3-pointers and finished with 19 points to go along with six rebounds. Logan Peters produced a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and Cole Berg and Cade Balvanz also had 10 points each.

Balderas orchestrated things with four assists. Peters added two steals.

Ben Heeren led Ogden (10-14) with 16 points.

South Hamilton blitzed the Bulldogs in the first and fourth quarters. The Hawks outscored Ogden 20-10 over the initial eight minutes and then closed it out with a 21-12 surge over the final eight minutes.

Balderas played the biggest role late with eight fourth-quarter points. Hill did the majority of his damage in the third quarter with 11 points.

South Hamilton shot 52 percent from the field (29 of 56), including 45 percent from behind the arc (5 of 11).

Tuesday’s winner will advance to next Saturday’s substate against either East Marshall or West Marshall in Nevada.
