A-P pounces early, ends Hawks’ season in 2A regional qtrs

SH concludes most successful season since 2011-12

PARKERSBURG — It wasn’t the ending the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team had in mind, but the overall picture was certainly brighter than in recent years.

Aplington-Parkersburg (14-7) turned up the pressure early and often en route to a 17-3 lead after eight minutes, as the Falcons handled the Hawks, 62-26, in a Class 2A Region 2 quarterfinal contest last night.

“A-P put a lot of pressure on us defensively and we didn’t handle it very well,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “When we were able to get scoring opportunities we didn’t finish at the rim or knock down free throws.”

A-P advanced to Friday’s regional semifinal against No. 8-ranked Grundy Center in Grundy Center.

Avari Everts and Jaycie Ellis poured in 12 points each for the Falcons, who outscored South Hamilton (9-15) 21-9 in the second quarter to build a 38-12 halftime lead. The final period was played under a continuous clock after A-P pushed its advantage past 35 points.

Megan Johnson canned a pair of 3-pointers and scored eight points for the Falcons. Jenna Bruns added seven more points.

No South Hamilton player scored more than four points. A-P limited leading scorers Marla Grubb and Sydney Friest to four each. Breanne Diersen and Emma Lewis also scored four.

The Hawks say goodbye to a senior class of five — Grubb, Anna Moss, Taylor Ratzke, Cheyanne Dilley and Kenady Campbell — who helped guide the team to its most successful season since a 17-7 mark in 2011-12. The nine wins is more than double what the Hawks accrued in the prior four seasons; they were 11-100 in the five seasons since 2011-12.

“These girls should be proud of the season that they had,” Henderson said. “We accomplished a lot of things that hadn’t happened in our program in quite a few years.”
