JEWELL — Now this is how a team answers the bell.

Just three nights after it was embarrassed in a 56-14 loss to Gilbert, the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team was able to right the ship and beat a team it lost to by 18 points just one month earlier.

A 16-4 fourth-quarter run made all of the difference, as the Hawks sent their veterans out right on Senior Night with a 41-36 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over Prairie City-Monroe.

“What a great win to send off the seniors in their last home game,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “After the way our game went on Tuesday, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but the girls bounced back in a big way.

“This is the kind of win that should give our girls a lot of confidence as we are getting close to postseason play.”

South Hamilton (6-12, 5-7 HOIC) trailed 32-25 after three quarters and the deficit grew to nine points, 34-25, with 6:30 remaining.

But the Hawks ability to get to the free throw line and knock down shots was critical. They went 9 of 14 at the charity stripe in the final period and allowed PCM (6-13, 4-8 HOIC) just two field goals.

“We had our backs against the wall … and the girls just made plays,” Henderson said. “Sydney (Friest) and Marla (Grubb) had some big rebounds, Rylee (Woodall) hit a huge 3, and Anna (Moss) made a tremendous steal on a fast break to protect the lead late in the game.”

Grubb put up a double-double — 16 points and 10 rebounds — in the win and scored six of her points in the fourth quarter. Woodall came off the bench to splash in the team’s two 3s and she finished with eight points. Moss was her usual versatile self with five points, four assists and two steals. Friest chipped in four points, eight rebounds and two steals.

Breanne Diersen also had four points in the win.

Regan Freland led PCM with 13 points, but she entered averaging nearly 20 a night.
