FORT DODGE — Webster City closed out its North Central Conference dual season with a pair of wins here Tuesday night.

The Lynx (11-8, 6-1 NCC), ranked 10th in the Class 2A team dual rankings by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association, picked up a forfeit-bloated 78-3 victory over St. Edmond and then won the final six matches that resulted in a 27-0 run to get by 16th-ranked (2A) Humboldt, 42-29.

WCHS clinched the runner-up spot in the race for the league dual title behind second-ranked (2A) Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, which concluded its NCC dual season a perfect 7-0. The two teams are expected to be the front-runners at Saturday’s conference tournament in Humboldt.

Chase Rattenborg (113 pounds), second-ranked Drake Doolittle (120), Luke Rohmiller (152), Harrison Hayes (160), seventh-ranked Zane Williams (170/182), Hunter Collicott (170/182), sixth-ranked Caleb Olson (195), sixth-ranked James Cherry (220) and top-ranked Cooper Lawson (285) all put together 2-0 performances.

WCHS was without senior 132-pounder Carson Hartnett due to illness, but head coach Chad Hisler expects him to be in the lineup on Saturday. Parker Rossing, a first-year wrestler, stepped into the lineup for the first time on short notice and performed admirably, Hisler said.

“Rossing just started wrestling this summer … I called him at 10 (a.m.) and he had to make weight,” Hisler said.

WCHS collected 11 forfeit victories against St. Edmond (1-15, 0-7 NCC). Rattenborg pinned the Gaels’ Ryan Duckett in 4:49 and Olson decked Jake Szalat in 1:10.

Lawson opened the dual against Humboldt with a 6-2 victory over Justin Jones, who has been ranked at various times this season. It was a preview of an expected semifinal clash at the NCC tournament.

Lawson has now won 36 consecutive matches dating back to the start of the 2016-17 season.

“(Jones) just kind of tried to block out the whole time,” Hisler said. “We could have even scored more I thought, but it was a good match for Cooper.”

Rattenborg and Doolittle also secured falls to give WCHS an early 15-5 lead, but Humboldt (18-6, 4-3 NCC) rattled off four consecutive falls to build a 29-15 advantage.

Rohmiller ignited the rally for the Lynx with a pin and Hayes followed it up with a 7-1 decision over Levi Naeve.

Hisler opted to flip-flop Collicott and Williams, and the move paid off. Collicott flattened Carter Krichau in 1:12 at 170 and Williams took care of Joel Osborn, 10-4, at 182.

“Last week I had already planned on trying to do that and they both had big wins,” Hisler said. “Hunter got a big win and he had to maintain his weight for a week so he could make 170.”

Olson put the dual out of reach with a second-period pin and Cherry fended off Brandon Johnson, 7-4, to close it out.

“I thought we would be favored in a lot of (the last six matches), but you never know,” Hisler said. “It was a good night. We got what we needed out of it.”

Saturday’s NCC tournament will get underway at 10 a.m.
