Balanced scoring, defensive pressure push SH girls by Saydel

Grubb and Friest combine for 20 points, 15 rebounds

JEWELL — A balanced scoring effort and the ability to force turnovers carried the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team in a Heart of Iowa Conference victory on Coach Jim Marsh Court Tuesday night.

Eight different players scored, four different players cashed in on 3-point attempts and the Hawks forced 20 turnovers in a 48-36 romp over Saydel.

South Hamilton (6-10, 4-5 HOIC) went with the slow and steady approach. It outscored Saydel (3-12, 0-9 HOIC) in each of the fourth quarters, but never by more than four points.

“This was a really good team win,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “I thought we were the more aggressive team. We did a good job of getting to the free throw line (the Hawks were 12 of 24 at the stripe) and our press forced them into some careless turnovers. We also did a great job of taking care of the ball. Only committing 10 turnovers is a good way to win basketball games.”

The inside duo of Marla Grubb and Sydney Friest produced 20 points and 15 rebounds. Grubb put up 10 points and nine boards, while Friest finished with 10 points and six caroms.

Taylor Volkmann chipped in eight points, six of those coming at the line, and Rylee Woodall finished with six points. Anna Moss (five), Breanne Diersen (four), Taylor Ratzke (three) and Aneesa Balderas (two) also joined in on the scoring fun.

Hannah Bowman led Saydel with 11 points.

South Hamilton will be at No. 8-ranked (Class 3A) Roland-Story on Friday. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
