Another year, another Norsemen Duals crown for Lynx

WCHS now 24-0 all-time at tourney; Doolittle new owner of takedowns record

STORY CITY — The majority of Drake Doolittle’s matches go something like this — he takes his opponent down and then lets him up, and then takes him down again and lets him up again, and then …

Wash, rinse, repeat.

It’s served the Webster City junior well over the last three seasons and, as an added bonus, gave him a coveted school record.

With 17 more takedowns at Saturday’s Norsemen Duals, the third-ranked (Class 2A 120 pounds) Doolittle became Webster City’s all-time record holder with 409. He passed former leader Mike Fertig Jr. (405) with his fifth and final first-period takedown against Roland-Story’s Lucas Risdal in the third round.

“He’s so good in every position and he’s obviously very good on his feet,” WCHS head coach Chad Hisler said of Doolittle, who will likely push 600 takedowns by the time he’s done. “To already have that record is great because there have been a lot of very good wrestlers who are good on their feet for us.”

Doolittle, a 2017 state runner-up, decked Risdal in 1:18 and it pushed him into fourth on the Lynx all-time wins leaderboard with 118. After a 5-0 day with four pins, he’ll take 120 career victories into Saturday’s Class 2A sectional tournament in Huxley.

WCHS, ranked 11th in the latest team dual rankings, continued its domination of the Norsemen Duals with five more victories over Central Decatur (70-9), Hampton-Dumont (78-3), Roland-Story (66-15), Saydel (65-17) and OA-BCIG (66-15). In five seasons competing, the Lynx are 24-0 and have outscored their opponents by 1,118 points, an average of 46.6 points per dual.

All 14 of the Lynx grapplers posted winning records; Chase Rattenborg (113), 10th-ranked Carson Hartnett (132), Luke Rohmiller (152), seventh-ranked Zane Williams (170) and top-ranked Cooper Lawson (285) all joined Doolittle with five wins. Reece Sadler (106), Nick Gasca (126), Harrison Hayes (160) and sixth-ranked James Cherry (220) all went 4-1.

Hunter Collicott (182) scratched out a 3-1 record, and three wrestlers — Brady Auderer (138), Daltyn Peck (145) and Caleb Olson (195) — went 3-2.

WCHS went 34-11 on the mat with 31 pins, including 23 in the first period and 12 in under one minute. The Lynx were also the recipients of 24 forfeits.

“There were some tough matches in there and we had some guys that are a little below .500 and I thought those kids wrestled well,” Hisler said. “They improved on some things they needed to work on.”

Doolittle and Hartnett shared the pins lead with four. Sadler and Hayes had three each. Rattenborg, Gasca, Auderer, Rohmiller, Collicott, Olson and Cherry all had multiple pins. Lawson, the Lynx lone unbeaten grappler, got just one match. He flattened OA-BCIG’s Ryder Meek in 40 seconds.

Rattenborg, just a freshman, received an early jolt of confidence in his opening bout against past state qualifier Wyatt Dale of Central Decatur. Down 9-0 after one period, Rattenborg hit a takedown and then locked up an inside cradle to pin Dale in 3:02.

“We feel like he’s never out of a match,” Hisler said of Rattenborg. “He sometimes gives up points to get points and that was a big win going into next week and it will give him some confidence.”
