Algona heats up from 3, beats Lynx girls by 17

ALGONA — Five first-quarter 3-pointers set the tone for the game, as Algona stormed out to a big lead and never looked back against North Central Conference rival Webster City Friday night.

Aliyah Buscher canned three triples and Abbey Holmes had two during the game’s initial eight minutes. The two combined for nine 3s in the Bulldogs’ 62-45 victory.

Buscher led all scorers with 22 points and Holmes wasn’t far behind with 20, as they helped Algona (12-3, 7-2 NCC) avenge a 50-47 loss to WCHS back on Dec. 12.

Losers of three straight contests, the Lynx (6-8, 4-5 NCC) found themselves behind 20-7 after one quarter. They closed to within 31-22 at the half, but were never able to make a serious second-half push.

Cassidy Nerland paced WCHS with another double-double — 18 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor McKinney fought through a defense set up to contain her and finished with 15 points, five rebounds and four assists. Haley Flaws and Halle Mason added six points each.

WCHS shot a respectable 41 percent from the field (16 of 39), but Algona countered with a 48-percent success rate (24 of 50).
