STORY CITY — Prairie City-Monroe crowned six individual champions and breezed to the Heart of Iowa Conference tournament team title with 2231⁄2 points here on Saturday.

Greene County was a distant second with 1651⁄2.

With just eight wrestlers in its lineup, South Hamilton tallied 70 points and finished seventh. The Hawks were without a number of regulars due to a skin condition that hit the team’s practice room.

“We hadn’t been on the mat for a few days and you don’t know what kind of rust you’re going to have, but attitude and effort are the two things we can control and I thought we did a nice job with that in the matches we won,” South Hamilton head coach Dan Brodie said. “I thought it was a positive day for us with the kids that were able to compete.”

Nathan Wilson (160 pounds) and Colton Willis (220) went a combined 5-2 and both placed third for South Hamilton.

Wilson’s lone loss was to second-ranked (Class 2A) and eventual champion Wes Cummings of PCM in the semifinals. He rebounded with back-to-back wins, including a 7-3 decision over North Polk’s Dylan Meiners in the bronze-medal match.

Wilson lost to Meiners earlier this season, but avenged that setback twice on Saturday.

“(Wilson) just had a really good game plan going in and was able to get the points he needed to win,” Brodie said.

Willis fell in the quarterfinals, but won his last two matches. He decked Greene County’s Gage Michaelson in 4:12 for third, the same grappler who sent Willis to the back side of the bracket earlier in the day.

“We told Colton, don’t leave anything on the mat and just give it everything you have,” Brodie said. “He had a different attitude about him and was dominant in that third-place match.”

Heston Johnson (113) was also third for South Hamilton.
