JEWELL — South Hamilton exchange student Mohamed Yokie had never been in a wrestling singlet prior to his arrival from Sierra Leone. He probably still wouldn’t know the feeling had Hawks’ head coach Dan Brodie not talked him into joining the team.

But as he pumped his fists and watched the gymnasium explode around him last night, he had to be awfully glad he decided to give the sport a try.

Yokie brought his teammates and home crowd to their feet with a wild 16-13 victory over Colfax-Mingo’s Noah Stromeyer in South Hamilton’s opening dual of a quadrangular, and he went on to have his hand raised twice more on forfeits.

How big of a win was it for Yokie? Brodie compared it to a state tournament match.

“Stuff like that is just as fun as any state tournament match,” Brodie said. “It was a classic, fun match to watch and coach. He was excited and our whole gym was excited. Our team was about as high as we possibly could get at that point.”

South Hamilton dropped the dual to Colfax-Mingo, 45-33, but rebounded nicely to take down Heart of Iowa Conference rivals Roland-Story, 42-39, and Saydel, 48-27.

Having a full lineup of 14 guys was an obvious advantage for the Hawks, who picked up two forfeit wins against the Norsemen and seven more against the Eagles.

“That’s a product of having everybody out … everybody contributed and that’s what it takes,” Brodie said. “(Against Roland-Story) we had to put guys in the right spots and bump some kids around to take advantage of the holes.

“They know we’re proud and excited for them, but at the same time we’re not satisfied with just a couple dual wins. But it’s a building block for the future.”

Dominic Summers (195) joined Yokie as unbeaten on the night. He decked a pair of opponents. Matthew Dankel filled in to accept the forfeit at 195 against Saydel.

Heston Strohman (113), Lane Swenson (138), Nathan Wilson (160), Nate Laube (182) and Colton Willis (220) all went 2-1. Securing one win were Jamie Hildreth (120), Michael Delegard (145), Trevor Thompson (152), Bailey Brinkmeyer (171) and Zach Larson (285).

Hildreth, Swenson, Delegard, Thompson, Wilson, Laube and Willis all had one fall.

South Hamilton will return to the mats at the Central Springs Round Robin Tournament on Saturday.
