WCHS boys take it on chin for first time this season

Gaels take advantage of Lynx defensive lapses; Moen scores 22

FORT DODGE — A stingy defense is what the Webster City boys’ basketball team has prided itself on during Marty McKinney’s tenure as head coach and that’s precisely why he’s reached peak frustration following the Lynx first loss of the season here Tuesday night.

Fort Dodge St. Edmond erupted for 28 fourth-quarter points and fended off WCHS down the stretch for a 66-61 North Central Conference victory. Andrew Gibb piled up 16 of his game-high 28 points over the final eight minutes.

But it was more than Gibbs’ production. McKinney was just as upset with the Gaels’ 10 3-point baskets.

“Defensively we just have not found the identity we need,” he said. “We’ve prided our program on defense, but (Tuesday night) we just couldn’t get the stop when we needed it.”

St. Edmond (5-3, 4-1 NCC) is the third opponent to score 60-plus points against WCHS (5-1, 3-1 NCC) this season. The Lynx allowed 60 points just four times a season ago and only six times over the past two seasons combined.

WCHS was without starting center Henry Hoversten, who continued to recover following a head-on collision with Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Will Weidemann last Friday night.

Dylan Steen and Nick Hackbarth picked up Hoversten’s minutes and combined to score 14 points.

Cameron Moen had the hot hand for the Lynx, as he buried four 3-pointers and finished with 22 points. Jordan Tanner had 11, while Noah McKinney and Tyler Bultena added six each.
