Swenson reaches finals, Hawks 9th at Doug Wood Invite

Brinkmeyer and Laube both 3rd; host Cougars take title

MANSON — The South Hamilton wrestling team put one wrestler in the finals and placed ninth in the 12-team Doug Wood Invitational here on Saturday.

Freshman 138-pounder Lane Swenson navigated his way through the quarterfinals and semifinals to reach the gold-medal bout. His run was ended by top-seeded and seventh-ranked Koby Hanson of Manson-Northwest Webster in the championship round.

Swenson opened his day with a pin and then knocked off second-seeded Taylon Engleen of Ogden, 7-4, in the semifinals.

Six South Hamilton grapplers placed, as the Hawks built up 77 points. Host Manson-Northwest Webster crowned four champs and won the tournament with 1971⁄2 points.

Bailey Brinkmeyer (170) and Nate Laube (182) both placed third for the Hawks.

Brinkmeyer, who opened the day in a pigtail match, won three consecutive bouts on the backside of the bracket to claw back for the bronze. He put South Central Calhoun’s Josh Van Hulzen on his back and got the fall just 47 seconds into their third-place match.

Laube reached the semifinals before suffering his only loss; he rebounded with a 10-4 victory over Carlos Nunez of Clarinda Academy in the consolation final.

Nobody had a busier day than Hawks’ 160-pounder Nathan Wilson, who stepped on the mat six times on his way to a fifth-place finish. He decked two preliminary-round opponents and finished off his day by flattening East Sac County’s Charlie Langer midway through the first period of their fifth-place bout.

Other South Hamilton place winners included Heston Strohman (fifth at 113) and Jose Galdeano (sixth at 126).

The Hawks will host a quadrangular Thursday night with Heart of Iowa Conference rivals Saydel and Roland-Story, as well as former league partner Colfax-Mingo. Wrestling is scheduled to get underway at 6 p.m.
