Stingy defense carries unbeaten Hawks past Cubs

Balderas, Hill and Klemp combine for 38 points, South Hamilton boys now 4-0

NEVADA — Frustrations at the offensive end of the court didn’t transfer over to defense for the South Hamilton boys’ basketball team here Tuesday night.

The result? A fourth double-digit victory in as many outings.

South Hamilton shot just 36 percent from the field — the Hawks made a head-scratching 21 of 59 attempts — but put the defensive clamps on Heart of Iowa Conference rival Nevada for a 54-38 win.

“If you would have told me before the game that we would (shoot) 36 percent from the field and win by 16, I would’ve said you were crazy,” South Hamilton head coach Nathan Hill said. “We couldn’t throw it in the ocean in the first half … but the thing I’m most proud of is we kept playing good defense. Sometimes when shots don’t fall it’s easy to get frustrated and let up on the defensive end, but we didn’t.”

The Hawks (4-0, 2-0 HOIC) knocked down just 11 of 32 first-half shots and yet still led by eight points, 26-18. The margin cracked double digits in the third quarter.

South Hamilton’s balanced offense featured three players in double figures, led by the floor general, senior point guard Marco Balderas, with 15 points. He also distributed five assists and got his hands on three steals.

Conner Hill pitched in 13 points — the junior off guard knocked down three of the team’s four 3-pointers — to go along with six rebounds and four assists. Logan Klemp notched 10 points and six rebounds.

Cole Berg and Logan Peters both added seven points. Peters led the Hawks on the glass with seven rebounds.

Nevada (1-2, 1-1 HOIC) received 12 points from Om’Unique Wilkerson, as well as six from Tyler Sansgaard and Luke Merfeld.

South Hamilton will be at home on Friday to face North Polk.
