Friest sparks SH girls to 9-point win over Saydel

Junior forward turns in third straight double-double; Moss cans three 3-pointers

DES MOINES — A third double-double in as many games from Sydney Friest and a solid performance shooting from distance carried the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team to its third win of the season here Tuesday night.

Friest put up 12 points and 11 rebounds, and the Hawks connected on five 3-pointers in a 46-37 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over Saydel. Seven girls contributed to the scoring.

“This was a nice team win,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “We got contributions from a lot of girls … and our outside shooting was as good as its been all year.

“Sydney is really giving us a ton of energy right now. She has stepped up for us these past two weeks.”

Anna Moss was responsible for three of the Hawks’ 3s; the senior guard finished with nine points. Rylee Woodall (seven points) and Taylor Ratzke (three points) also dialed it up from long distance. Woodall collected six rebounds as well.

Inside the paint, Breanne Diersen helped Friest out with seven points and nine caroms.

Saydel (3-8, 0-6 HOIC) stayed within striking distance behind seven 3s, led by Destiny Butters with three. Hannah Bowman scored a team-high 10 points, while Butters and Katie Schmidt had nine each.

South Hamilton (3-7, 2-4 HOIC) slowly expanded on its lead throughout the contest. The Hawks outscored Saydel by three points in the first quarter, one in the second, two in the third and three in the fourth.

Henderson also credited his team’s ability to make free throws down the stretch. The Hawks were 13 of 18 overall at the line.

“I was very proud of the way the girls finished the game,” he said. “Late in the game, Anna got banged up, so we leaned on Aneesa (Balderas) and Emma (Lewis) to help close the game and they did a great job.”
