SCC out works Hawks at both ends of floor in easy girls’ hoops win

ROCKWELL CITY — A ho-hum start that lacked energy put the South Hamilton girls’ basketball team in a hole it was unable to dig out of here Tuesday night.

South Central Calhoun (3-0) roared out to a 13-point lead after one quarter, 21-8, and the unbeaten Titans coasted to the finish line for a 67-35 victory over the Hawks (0-2).

“Our energy level was way too low from the opening tip,” South Hamilton head coach Mark Henderson said. “SCC out-worked us from the start.”

The Titans had six different players account for their seven 3-pointers and they shot 47 percent from the field (27 of 57) compared to just 24 percent (11 of 46) for South Hamilton.

Maddie Jones scored a game-high 16 points for SCC and teammate Hannah Seil poured in 11.

South Hamilton also had two players score in double figures; Marla Grubb notched six of her 12 points at the free throw line and Rylee Woodall cashed in on the team’s only two 3-pointers on her way to 11 points.

“Rylee had a good game for us off the bench,” Henderson said. “She got good looks within the offense and was smart about when to attack the basket.”

Sydney Friest pitched in nine points and five rebounds. Grubb corralled six caroms and Woodall joined Breanne Diersen with a pair of steals.

Up 36-15 at the half, SCC put together another offensive outburst in the third quarter and outscored the Hawks 20-10.

South Hamilton will make its Heart of Iowa Conference debut Friday night when it makes the short trek to Story City to take on longtime rival Roland-Story. The tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. On Saturday, the Hawks will travel to Ogden for another non-conference game at 6 p.m.
