12 Hawks land on all-district football teams
Klemp father and son collect two of biggest awards
WEBSTER CITY — The South Hamilton football team earned 12 all-district honors and collected two of the most prestigious awards following a turnaround season that ended in the state playoffs for the first time since 2013.
Senior linebacker Logan Klemp was named to co-Defensive Most Valuable Player alongside Van Meter linebacker Sam Thompson in Class 1A District 6, while the Hawks’ leader, Corey Klemp, was tagged the co-Coach of the Year with Eagle Grove’s Paul Hansch.
In addition to Logan Klemp, four other South Hamilton players were named to the first-team — running back DJ Klonglan, offensive lineman Zeke Balderas, defensive lineman Grant Evans and defensive back Wes Wynkoop.
Second-team accolades went to South Hamilton’s Teagan Risetter (offensive line), Jared Ullestad (defensive line), Mateo Balderas (linebacker) and Cole Berg (defensive back). In a rare occurrence, Klonglan snagged a second all-district award as the second-team punter.
Honorable mention choices were Marco Balderas, Garrett Grady and Sam Lewis.
Logan Klemp and Evans, both four-year starters, were the defensive catalysts for a team that allowed just 15.6 points per game. Klemp, a first-team all-state selection by the Iowa Newspaper Association, piled up 821⁄2 tackles, including 111⁄2 for loss. Evans was second on the team with 461⁄2 stops.
Wynkoop provided 30 tackles and an interception. Mateo Balderas accumulated 431⁄2 tackles, while Ullestad finished the season with 18 while opening up free running lanes for the linebackers.
Berg led the Hawks in interceptions with five.
Klonglan was the home run hitter out of the South Hamilton backfield, as he averaged 8.0 yards per carry. He finished the season with 754 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Klonglan also averaged 39.8 yards per punt.
The improvement on the offensive line was a big reason why South Hamilton was able to go 8-2 and finish second in the district behind unbeaten state champion Van Meter. South Hamilton rushed for 2,745 yards, the sixth-most in 1A, and averaged 6.1 yards per carry.
