No. 13 Comets run Lynx spikers out of postseason
Sweep in regional semifinal the end of the road for seniors Vogelbacher, Mason, Meyer and Nerland
CHARLES CITY — It was the architect, not the hammers, that spoiled the postseason run and ended the season for the Webster City volleyball team here Tuesday night.
Charles City setter Sydney Loeckle flummoxed the Lynx with an array of quick sets and back sets, and they allowed the Comets’ bombers to swing freely in a one-sided Class 4A Region 5 semifinal.
Loeckle dished out 31 assists and helped her team hit .360, as 13th-ranked Charles City rolled to the three-set sweep of WCHS, 25-15, 25-11, 25-14.
“Their setter does a really good job of controlling the tempo of the game,” WCHS head coach Jess Howard said of Loeckle, who ranks eighth in 4A in assists with 759. “They ran a quick set in the middle that we practiced for, but it was quicker than we’d seen all season. It’s hard to key in on just one girl because (Loeckle) does a great job of masking who she’s going to and that made it difficult for us to (set up the block).”
Charles City cranked out 39 kills to just 16 for the Lynx (9-26). Taylor Schmidt led all attackers with 11 kills. The Comets also received nine kills from Jodie Sindlinger, and seven a piece from Bailee Bortz and Sami Heyer.
“They were relentless and they were able to come out of a lot of the rallies on top,” Howard said. “We knew that anytime we gave them a free ball that it was going to come back harder at us.”
Adalie Schwandt and Kamry Dawson both had five kills to lead the Lynx. Halle Mason added four more.
WCHS finished with five more attack errors than kills and the result was a minus-.076 kill efficiency.
Libero Zoey Woodle paced the Lynx defense with eight digs. Mason collected seven and Sarah Vogelbacher registered five to go along with nine assists. Cynthia Whitehill contributed seven assists and three digs.
The match was the end of the road for four WCHS seniors — Vogelbacher, Mason, Cassidy Nerland and Stacey Meyer. Nerland put up two kills and three digs in her final match, while Meyer had the team’s lone block.
Charles City (25-14) advanced to Monday’s regional final against third-ranked Waverly-Shell Rock (41-5) in Waverly. The two teams met twice in the regular season with the Go-Hawks winning both.
