DIKE — Josiah Brown is not usually a talkative guy and that’s why South Hamilton head cross country coach Darrell Paulsen knew just how excited his only senior was as the Hawks made the trek back to Jewell yesterday evening.

“I heard Josiah talk more after the race and on the bus than I have in my life, so I knew he was overjoyed,” Paulsen said. “He really wanted to prove a point.”

Oh, he did.

Brown took the team lead and guided sixth-ranked South Hamilton back to the state meet for the third consecutive season at the Class 2A State Qualifying Meet on the flat terrain at Fox Ridge Golf Course.

Brown placed fifth in 17:05 and was one of four Hawks in the top 15. All of their scorers were among the first 20 runners to cross, as they produced 55 points to finish in the runner-up position, six points behind No. 8 Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (49).

“The kids were really happy, but how can you lose with 55 points?” Paulsen jokingly asked. “We ran really well, but we knew Garner was good, too.”

No. 14 South Hardin (96) was third and also advanced to next weekend’s state meet in Fort Dodge.

Logan Peters and Quinton Grove joined Brown in the top 10 of the tough field. Peters went out strong again and completed the race in 17:20 to take seventh. Grove was right beside him in eighth at the 17:21 mark.

But it wasn’t just the Big Three that carried the Hawks. Their postseason rookies stepped up as well.

Ty Skartvedt crossed in 17:39 to place 15th, a spot that would have earned him an individual entrance into the state field. Aaron Hegland finished 20th in 18:15.

“Ty and Aaron both looked really strong,” Paulsen said.

GHV had the individual champion in Reece Smith (15:58), as well as the bronze medalist in Ray Cataldo (16:52).

The South Hamilton girls’ team finished at the back of the 12-team pack with 292 points. Third-ranked Crestwood (42), sixth-ranked Cascade (65) and 10th-ranked Waukon (96) advanced to state.

It was the freshman trio that again paced the Hawks. Yolanda Licea (22:59) led the way in 40th, Marissa Jensen (23:31) was 45th and Abby Ervin (23:28) finished 50th.

“They ran about what they’ve run all year and gave it everything they had,” Paulsen said of the rookies.

Emily Willadsen (26:14, 77th) and Ella Carlson (27:16, 80th) also scored.

Crestwood’s Ellie Friesen (18:30) was the girls’ individual champion.
