Hawks deck Rams in 3 sets on Senior Night

JEWELL — Six South Hamilton volleyball seniors went out with a flourish last night, as they were all on the floor early in the Hawks quick sweep of Heart of Iowa Conference rival Greene County on Coach Jim Marsh Court.

Anna Moss, Katie Johnson, Makayla Cavan, Chloe Barkema, Anna Ervin and Taylor Ratzke all got the start in the team’s regular season finale. Johnson, who has been battling an eye injury, had to come off the floor after the opening point, but she was able to enjoy South Hamilton’s 25-15, 25-10, 25-14 rout of the Rams.

“We had a different lineup for Senior Night and it went really smooth,” South Hamilton acting head coach Amy Klemp said. “The girls played really relaxed and comfortable, and they just had fun out there.”

Greene County (6-23, 2-5 HOIC) was unable to keep up with the relentless attack from the South Hamilton front row. The Hawks (21-10, 3-4 HOIC) hit .418 as a team and belted 36 kills. Moss and Lily Skartvedt both smacked 10, Barkema ripped off six, Ratzke had five and Breanne Diersen chipped in four.

“Our hitting percentage was really good,” Klemp said. “We didn’t have as many errors and we spread it around a little bit.”

South Hamilton posted 13 service aces, led by Skartvedt with five and Makayla Cavan with three.

Defensively, Ratzke had a standout night in the front row with six blocks. Taylor Volkmann collected a team-high nine digs; Moss finished with eight and Hailey Cavan registered six.

Volkmann also led the setters with 19 assists. Makayla Cavan had seven.

South Hamilton will now have more than a week to prepare for its Class 2A regional opener. The Hawks will host either Central Springs or Belmond-Klemme on Monday, Oct. 23. Klemp says last night’s win should be a good springboard for the players into the postseason.

“Having a good night going into regionals should help us,” she said.
