Hawks boys 11th, Licea sets school record at Wartburg

WAVERLY — A total of 356 prep runners took part in the inaugural Steve Johnson Invite on the campus of Wartburg College on Saturday.

South Hamilton joined the loaded field of primarily Class 4A and 3A schools, along with three programs from Minnesota and Wisconsin.

The seventh-ranked (Class 2A) Hawk boys’ team finished 11th with 273 points. Two other ranked programs — No. 5 (4A) Dubuque Hempstead and No. 1 (1A) Nodaway Valley — finished first and third, while Dubuque Senior was the runner-up.

Quinton Grove led the way for South Hamilton. He crossed the finish line in 17:07.6 to place 30th in the 5K race. Josiah Brown (17:17.0) was 35th and Logan Peters (17:30.1) was 45th. Ty Skartvedt (17:37.9) gave the Hawks a fourth top-50 performance; he was 49th.

South Hamilton was without Aaron Hegland, who has fit in as the team’s No. 5 runner throughout the season. Logan Austin (19:22.8) filled the role and placed 114th.

Yolanda Licea became the first South Hamilton female runner to complete a 5K in under 23 minutes. Her school-record time of 22:40.9 was good for 86th place. Her freshman classmates Marissa Jensen (23:39.3) and Abby Ervin (24:03.7) placed 103rd and 108th.

Emily Willadsen (26:11.5, 122nd) and Ella Carlson (27:27.5, 130th) also scored.

The Hawk girls were 18th in the field with 549 points. Onalaska (Wis.) won the team crown.
