Lynx get sneak peek at NCC course, perform well at Algona

WCHS boys fifth, Bultena leads in 13th

ALGONA — A partial preview of the North Central Conference meet left the Webster City cross country teams hopeful following Tuesday’s Algona Invitational.

Competing at River Road Golf Course — the site of next month’s conference meet — and against large fields, the Lynx set a number of season’s best performances and that left head coach Joe Lambert excited about the future possibilities.

“It was an excellent night for us,” Lambert said. “The training, pretty much up and down the roster, really showed itself well. Our times are coming down and Algona was a good place to be tested.”

The WCHS boys’ team scored 188 points to place fifth in the field of 17 teams. Clear Lake secured the team crown with 65 points, while 13th-ranked (Class 3A) Humboldt was the runner-up with 75. Charles City (77) and Okoboji (161) were third and fourth.

Lynx senior Tyler Bultena took the team lead and turned in a strong performance. His time of 17:32.73 earned him 13th-place in the field of more than 100 runners.

John Piaszynski was a bit under the weather, but still managed to take 25th in 18:08.51. Sam Vanderpool (18:36.02) was back in 45th and Jacob Willson (18:53.21) moved up to No. 4 on the team’s hierarchy; he placed 54th.

Tucker Judkins (18:57.09) finished 56th to round out the Lynx scoring team.

Kaelyn Butz moved to the front of the pack for the WCHS girls’ team, as her time of 23:45.87 was good enough to place 66th. The Lynx team score of 383 points was 14th.

Like Piaszynski, Emma Piper ran despite feeling less than 100 percent. But she hung tough and crossed in 24:48.69 to place 79th.

Haley Flaws (24:53.53, 81st), Kaitlyn Wagner (25:04.15, 85th) and Elycia Obrecht (25:05.08, 86th) were also scorers.

Third-ranked Humboldt withstood a challenge from sixth-ranked (3A) Charles City at the top of the girls’ standings. Behind another individual victory from Bryce Gidel (19:17.56), the Wildcats finished with 50 points, seven better than Charles City.
