JEWELL — DJ Klonglan didn’t step onto Taylor Field Friday night thinking he would be a focal point of the South Hamilton offense, but when pressed into action he responded exactly like the “next man in” should.

The junior running back stepped in for Tanner Volkmann after Volkmann went down with an injury and ran wild on Manson-Northwest Webster to the tune of 189 yards and a pair of touchdowns on just nine carries. South Hamilton put up 371 grounds yards in all en route to a 46-24 blitzing of the Cougars in the Class 1A District 6 opener for both teams.

Unbeaten through three weeks for the first time in a decade — the Hawks started 7-0 in the 2007 season on their way to the playoffs — South Hamilton (3-0, 1-0) broke free with 16 unanswered third-quarter points and reached the end zone twice more in the fourth quarter to put the contest on ice.

Klonglan, who averaged 21 yards per carry, was a big part of the second-half surge. He found the open field and scored on a 39-yard stroll late in the third period and added a 1-yard touchdown with 4:01 remaining in the game.

“(Klonglan) is sneaky fast and has a little shiftiness to him that he can get lost pretty easy,” South Hamilton head coach Corey Klemp said. “With Tanner going out, I don’t think (the Cougars) paid a lot of attention to DJ and he made them pay for it.”

Manson-Northwest Webster (1-2, 0-1) had plenty of other things to worry about, namely halfback Logan Klemp and fullback Grant Evans. Logan Klemp had the undivided attention of the Cougar defense, but he still managed to rumble for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 15 totes. Evans churned out 78 yards and found the end zone once.

“Late in the second quarter we started having more success running the ball,” Corey Klemp said. “When the third quarter came about, we came out and moved the ball pretty efficiently on offense. We like where we’re at, but there are definitely some areas we need to clean up.”

Volkmann scored the opening touchdown of the game on a 2-yard run midway through the first quarter and Logan Klemp galloped in from 13 yards away early in the second to push South Hamilton in front 14-0.

Manson-Northwest Webster closed to within 14-12 at the half on a pair of second quarter touchdowns — 14- and 1-yard runs by Blake Larsen and Reid Steinberg.

But it was the South Hamilton show after the break.

Klemp’s second touchdown — a 5-yard run — preceded Klonglan’s break away score, as the Hawks upped their advantage to 30-12 with just 12 minutes remaining.

South Hamilton out-gained the Cougars 414-325.

Manson-Northwest Webster had success through the air, as quarterback Derek Girard completed 15 of 29 passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He hooked up with Keegan Pritchard on 6- and 12-yard passes in the fourth quarter that resulted in 12 points. Pritchard was on the receiving end of 10 passes that covered 113 yards.

Larsen led the Cougars on the ground with 47 yards.

Logan Klemp had himself a game defensively as well with seven solo tackles and 11 in all. Mateo Balderas collected 71⁄2 stops.

Hawks’ quarterback Marco Balderas was efficient through the air. He made good on all three of his passes for 43 yards. Jared Ullestad (23 yards), Logan Klemp (15 yards) and Volkmann (7 yards) all had one catch.
