Flaws and Nerland named to all-NCC softball first team

McKinney lands a spot on second team, Woodle placed on third team for Lynx

WEBSTER CITY — Webster City secured two spots on the all-North Central Conference softball first team and collected four awards in all, it was announced today.

Junior first baseman Cassidy Nerland and junior left fielder Haley Flaws were tabbed as first-team choices for the Lynx. Freshman shortstop Taylor McKinney was named to the second team and sophomore right fielder Zoey Woodle landed a spot on the third team.

Fourteen players were placed on the first team. Conference champion and Class 3A state qualifier Humboldt led the way with four selections; freshman pitcher Ellie Jacobson and senior infielder Avery Terwilliger were unanimous choices and they were joined by freshman teammates Carlie Thompson and Mady Lange.

Other unanimous first-team selections included Hampton-Dumont senior infielder Cassy Miller and Clear Lake freshman infielder Julia Merfeld.

Flaws, a speedy lead-off hitter, led WCHS offensively with a .387 batting average. She was also the team leader in hits (29), runs scored (22) and stolen bases (39). She hit .409 against league opponents.

Nerland, a multiple-time first-team honoree, hit at a .348 clip, but excelled inside the NCC where she hit .452. Her four home runs, 26 RBI and .609 slugging percentage were all team highs.

McKinney added her second all-league honor in as many years and was the anchor of the Lynx defensively. At the plate, she hit .246 with 10 RBI and nine stolen bases.

A first-year everyday starter, Woodle became one of the team’s most dependable hitters out of the No.2 spot in the lineup. She finished the campaign with a .381 average and tied Nerland for second on the team in hits with 24. She also slotted second in stolen bases with 18 and was thrown out just once.

After a slow start to the conference season, WCHS won its final four games to finish all alone in third place behind Humboldt and runner-up Algona.
